Fat Thursday - 20th of February - the sweetest Polish tradition
18-02-2020Fat Thursday is a real feast for the those with a sweet tooth. This Thursday Poland will go nuts for donuts! It is a traditional Christian feast marking the last Thursday before Lent and was also a celebration marking welcoming the arrival of the spring. On that day you can eat as many donuts as you like – the more the better! First donuts were said to be fried in ancient Rome, but Poles began their love affair with donuts back in the 16th century. Polish donut is called „Pączek”. Pączek is a large fried donut filled with marmalades and glazed with sugar, and depending on the bakery you go to, it might be topped with candied orange peel. It is absolutelly delicious – trying it is a must! Statistically, every Pole eats two and a half donut on fat Thursday. We will have tons of donuts waiting for our guests at our reception. Although one donut is 240 calories we will definatelly going to eat as much as we can and beat the statistics…

Central Europe in Photobooks, is the first comprehensive display of photobooks from Central Europe that covers over a hundred years of their history focusing on the most ground-breaking, most interesting and beautiful pieces. The International Book Fair in Krakow works to consolidate the image of Krakow and Malopolska as a region that for centuries has set the course of development for Polish culture, fuelled change, influenced tastes and created literary trends. Oskar Schindler's Enamel Factory – permanent exhibition - Kraków under Nazi Occupation 1939–1945
10-09-2019Exhibition Kraków under Nazi Occupation 1939–1945 is located in the former administrative building of Oskar Schindler’s Enamel Factory at 4 Lipowa Street. The exhibition is primarily a story about Kraków and its inhabitants, both Polish and Jewish, during World War Two. It is also a story about Nazi Germans – the occupiers who arrived here on 6 September 1939, brutally disrupting Kraków’s centuries-long history of Polish-Jewish relations. The great history of World War Two intersects here with everyday life, and the personal dramas of individual people overlap with the tragedy which affected the whole world. Main Market Square underground museum
22-08-2019We reccomend seeing rynek underground permanent exhibition. Cracow's Main Square is an unusual place. Delineated in the middle of the XIII century, it became the principal public area of the city. Unchanged through centuries, today it is the heart of Cracow. But in order to see how it looked like in the late Middle Ages, in the time when Mikolaj Kopernik was walking about - one needs to go underground. nderneath Cracow Main Square is an odyssey into past, brought to life centuries later by a group of archeologists. It is a sanctuary full of construction and architecture relics and stone paths. Main entrance is in Cloth Hall (Sukiennice). ICE Classic: Simon Rattle - Classical music
15-01-2019Simon Rattle - Classical music THURSDAY, JANUARY 17, 2019, 7:30 PM; ICE Kraków Congress Centre, ul. Konopnickiej 17 The latest instalment of the ICE Classic cycle kicks off in January. It starts on the17 January, traditionally at the Krzysztof Penderecki Auditorium Hall, with Sir Simon Rattle and his London Symphony Orchestra. Sir Simon is one of the finest and most charismatic conductors working today, using his baton like a magic wand to transform sounds into pure musical gold. Sir Simon has been in charge of London’s longest-running orchestra since September 2017; the iconic musicians famously select their own conductors, with past maestros including André Previn, Claudio Abbado and Valery Gergiev. Led by the conductor, the London Symphony Orchestra has been universally acclaimed and their second season together features influences from contemporary music, folk inspirations and unexpected combinations. The concert at ICE Kraków will be the perfect illustration: we will hear Béla Bartók’s unsettling Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta (used as part of the soundtrack to the cult horror The Shining), and Anton Bruckner’s Symphony No. 6; rooted in Romanticism, parts of the piece feature unmistakeable elements of Expressionism.

All Around Nativity Scenes
11-12-2018Once upon a time they provided entertainment for wealthy Cracovians – today they usher in the festive spirit throughout the city. The annual contest and exhibition of Cracovian nativity scenes has been an important part of the rhythm of Christmas celebrations for decades. The tradition dates back to the 19th century, when craftsmen living in suburbs and villages on the outskirts of Kraków found themselves short of work in winter and took to carolling and performing nativity plays at homes of wealthy Cracovians. The first contest for the most beautiful nativity scenewas held in 1937 and takes place yearly ever since. The campaign All Around Nativity Scenes (6 December – 31 January) brings the dazzling constructions beyond museum walls to be displayed in the city space. This year we can admire 26 archival nativity scenes awarded prizes and distinctions during past contests. As in previous years, the campaign has commissioned several brand new, large double-sided nativity scenes presented in illuminated cases throughout the city, bringing the total of new constructions up to 15.

Photo Festival
01-06-2018The 16th Photomonth Festival is a confrontation of various aspects of the hectic contemporary world we usually try to push out of our minds. Iris Sikking, curator of the Main Programme of Krakow Photomonth Festival 2018, focuses on the concept of space of flows formulated by Manuel Castells in 1996. During the last twenty years, the vision described in the Spanish author’s seminal work The Rise of the Network Society has slowly become a reality. The rapid development of communications and information transfer has resulted in the creation of a new social group: open, stripped of borders and constantly changing, in which we are all becoming elements of an invisible network spanning the entire globe. We are constantly bombarded by imagery from all corners of the globe, shifting our perception of geographical and national borders, and altering our concept of localness: the traditional “space of places” has been replaced by a “space of flows”. On the flip side, globalisation has created new social inequalities and exclusions, and new means of manipulation. Given the rate of change, rapid movement of people and objects and the deluge of information, it is increasingly difficult to see what hides beneath the surface. Contemporary media overwhelms us with information but don’t help us make sense of the events and https://bit.ly/2J2bzWS

The gallery of cartoon characters which have accompanied generations of Polish fans is opened by the now-forgotten protagonist of pre-war newspaper comic strips Jobless Froncek and the immortal Koziołek Matołek. Professor Filutek and his dog Filuś step down from the back cover of “Przekrój”, and we’ll be taking a peek into the studio of Papcio Chmiel where the story of Tytus, Romek and A’Tomek started sixty years ago. We’ll also visit the Slavic village of Mirmiłowo, home of Kajko and Kokosz, and join Jonek, Jonka and Kleks on a quest for a dragon’s egg and Alaskan gold, while Kudłaczek and Bąbelek take us to the soda water spring. More recent characters include the skateboarding Jeż Jerzy and Wilq battling neighbourhood crime. This is the first time Polish comics step into the usually more serious museum salons. And it’s not just an opportunity to meet your favourite characters – you can also see how culture evolved during the last century through the prism of the medium. The exhibition opening coincides with the Kraków Comic Book Festival. (dd) https://bit.ly/2CPaaLf
Exhibition
02-05-2018Museum of the Contemporary Art MOCAK invites to their new exhibitions, one of them is called Motherland in Art. The key concept of ‘motherland’ has been undergoing a great and at times painful modernisation in today’s world. The old take was that the motherland was where one grew up, belonged, and which one defended against others even at the cost of laying down one’s life. Today, a profound transformation, above all in our perceptions, is required to get our minds round the concept of motherland – otherwise we shall be doomed to be strangers in someone else’s motherland, or to accept strangers in ours. Artists have long adopted the model of a global motherland. They communicate in the global language of images and move between living in different countries with ease, in each finding fodder for their imagination. Thus, in our own search for an answer to the question ‘What does motherland mean to us?’ it is worth while reading the answers that artists give. The exhibition Motherland in Art intends to compile and present the most striking proposals. https://bit.ly/2FBTBDU

20-04-2018National Museum in Cracow invites to their new exhibition The Other Side of Things. Polish Design After 1989. The exhibition at the Main Building of the National Museum in Krakow is the first ever wide-reaching presentation of how design has changed in Poland over the last 30 years. We will discover challenges faced by designers in the years after the political breakthrough, driven by the collapse of former ties with industry and under the newly forming capitalist system. The exhibition reveals how Polish designers entered the international arena at the turn of the 21st century and how Polish brands became increasingly noticeable in international markets, until they became equal to the competition. Designing things tends to be associated with mass production and utility, but the exhibition also draws attention to less commercial aspects to contemporary design. We will discover niche trends, technologies which can be difficult to accept by the majority of users, and experiments in aestheticism. https://bit.ly/2J9Sldq

09-03-2018Kraków Opera invites to their staging of Don Pasquale directed by Jerzy Stuhr, wellknown Polish actor and director. It is considered the most outstanding opera of all Donizetti’s 70 coperatic works and the best Italian comic opera ever. It has been called “a jewel of charm, lightness and joyful humour”. This musical treasure is based on a bravado plot, getting the characters involved in risky adventures. As usual money, and of course love, are at stake, though in this case love comes second. This work of unique beauty represents the genre at its best. Jerzy Stuhr plays with the genre, the convention of comic opera, so the production is sheer fun, the very essence of humour and the stage magic. Participation of one of the most acclaimed comic actors in his staging is a brand mark of his theatrical art. http://bit.ly/2tq19sw

26-02-2018Iconic band Toto will perform at Tauron Kraków Arena this Wednesday (2/28). The first track played on RMF FM when it launched in 1990 was Toto’s Africa. And it’s hardly a surprise; their complex, expansive songs overflow with rock energy and make you want to sing along. But the group’s style reaches beyond traditional rock, featuring elements of pop, soul, funk, blues, R&B and even jazz. Toto’s strength is not just their music, but also the excellent lineup: the group’s four members are all great singers. They’ve been playing for over forty years, and they’ve sold forty million albums, received six Grammies and released megahits including Hold the Line, Rosanna and Stop Loving You. And although they are rich and famous, they never forget about those less fortunate by supporting war veterans and activities of the UN. http://bit.ly/2CnnYRt

07-02-2018Kraków Philharmonic Orchestra will celebrate 120th birth anniversary of George Gershwin with concerts on Friday and Saturday. He believed that “true music must reflect the thought and aspirations of the people and time. My people are Americans. My time is today.” Rumour has it he tried to get lessons from all the composers he’d met, such was his low regard of his own talent and skills. But when he approached Maurice Ravel, the Frenchman replied, “Why become a second-rate Ravel when you're already a first-rate Gershwin?” In his orchestral works such as Rhapsody in Blue, operas such as Porgy and Bess, songs and Broadway musicals, George Gershwin combined classical, jazz and popular music like no other composer. His Cuban Overture and Catfish Row (the instrumental suite from Porgy and Bess) will resound at the Kraków Philharmonic on 9 and 10 February. http://bit.ly/2ErtAuG

Initially, only the services and privileged individuals had the luck to sit at the wheel of the modern Fiat 125p which was a sign of high social status. However, as time went by and the dream came true, more and more people began to notice that Fiat 125p did not stand for luxury and prestige only, but it also meant day-to-day hardships which stemmed from socialist economy. How much was the 125p model? How could it be obtained? Who drove it? How was it used in the party’s propaganda? What were holidays on four wheels like? We’ll learn answers to those and other questions at the exhibition. http://bit.ly/2wNhMfd

What kinds of journeys – both in the geographical and symbolic sense – will Poland’s young directors take us on? Krzysztof Garbaczewski’s The Heart of the Bold comes to the Kościuszko Mound to tell the story of the freedom fighter Tadeusz Kościuszko told through the perspective of Booker T. Washington, leader of the African American community at the turn of the 20th century. http://bit.ly/2xfy2II

PIEROGI FESTIVAL
04-08-2017One of the tastiest event in Kraków: Pierogi Festival is just around the corner. “The discovery of a new dish confers more happiness on humanity than the discovery of a new star.” It’s hard to disagree with the sentiment published by Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin in The Physiology of Taste almost two centuries ago. Pierogi are undoubtedly one of the crowning dishes of Polish cuisine. They were made by our great-grandmothers, grandmothers and mothers, and now we make them ourselves. It could also be said that pierogi are going through a revival – and during the annual Pierogi Festival at the Main Market Square, restaurateurs continue to surprise us with new flavours and combinations, creating unique feasts for the senses. It’s no accident that the date of the festival (11-15 August) coincides with the Feast of Assumption of Mary and its tradition of blessing of herbs and making – you guessed it! – pierogi.https://goo.gl/1RESk7

Such is the role of art, and this is the kind of art that MOCAK endeavours to show in all its activities. But art also has another, more ‘arty’ face – as one big conglomeration of familiar images of acclaimed pedigree, works with their own idiosyncratic context, in which they have thrilled and enraptured many. Another exhibition, ”The Artist and the Trace: Materials from the MOCAK Collection Artists' Archive” is a valuable source of information about Polish and international contemporary art. https://goo.gl/zXBU5N
